Currently I see this in my *status log (I added/replaced some things in <>s):
IRC connection timed out. Reconnecting...
Disconnected from IRC. Reconnecting... <A>
IRC connection timed out. Reconnecting... <E>
Disconnected from IRC (Can't resolve server hostname). Reconnecting... <F>
Disconnected from IRC (Invalid SSL certificate: hostname doesn't match). Reconnecting... <B>
|Certificate:
| <a 2 screen long certificate information here>
Disconnected from IRC. Reconnecting... <C>
Connection Refused. Reconnecting... <D>
I see several problems with it.
I don't see which server ZNC is attempting to connect. “Reconnecting“ might be better changed to “Trying next server: server.name…”. Also I suggest chaging “Cannot connect to IRC” to “Cannot connect to server.name”, and make similar changes
The phrase “Disconnected from IRC” on line A is ambiguous. I assume that server unexpectedly closed connection here?
The phrase “Disconnected from IRC” on line F is just wrong, how can you disconnect from a server you couldn't even resolve? I suggest using the phrase “disconnected” only regarding established connections, and in the case of SSL, regarding connections with successful handshakes.
On line B, I get an invalid certificate error, and then follows certificate information. It is not clear if this information is related to the error, or to the next connection attempt, since line B ends with another “Reconnecting”. I suggest removing “Reconnecting...” from the line B.
Line C, I've been told, is not another connection attempt, but a side effect of printing certificate information
There's a lot of certificate information that is likely ignored by most people. I would limit the output to information about who issued the certificate to whom, the validity period, and the fingerprints. Perhaps there could be a command to print full information.
And the worst of all, there are two spaces between the sentences on lines D and E, please fix asap.
