The options are:

  • Don't ensure any encoding at all (legacy mode, not recommended)
  • Try to parse as UTF-8 and as ____ , send as UTF-8
  • Try to parse as UTF-8 and as ____. send as
  • Parse and send as ____ only

I don't understand why the first is not recommended, but I might be a little more experienced with setting IRC charsets than random XChat user (which defaults to IRC ISO/Unicode hybrid). But this random user wonders what is recommended then if the first option isn't.

This seems to depend a lot on language and I think I am starting to understand these options talking at freenode.

Suggestion:

  • Parse and send as ____ only (UTF-8 recommended)
  • Try to parse as UTF-8 and as ____, send as UTF-8 (recommended)

and the ____ depends on native language or similar and with Finns it would be latin1?
