When the main nick isn't available, znc first tries the alternative nick (if configured), then the main nick with "-" appended, with "|" etc (lots and lots of different things).
Let's say we have Nick=eric and AltNick=eric-. Then the following can happen:
IRC::eric::efnet == Connected()
[CAP LS]
[NICK eric]
[USER eric "eric" "eric" :eric]
[NOTICE AUTH :*** Processing connection to irc.underworld.no]
[NOTICE AUTH :*** Processing connection to irc.underworld.no]

[NOTICE AUTH :*** Couldn't look up your hostname]
[NOTICE AUTH :*** Got Ident response]
[NOTICE AUTH :*** Got Ident response]
[:irc.underworld.no CAP * LS :multi-prefix]
[CAP REQ :multi-prefix]
[:irc.underworld.no 433 * eric :Nickname is already in use.]
[NICK eric-]
[:irc.underworld.no CAP * ACK :multi-prefix ]
[CAP END]
[:irc.underworld.no 433 * eric- :Nickname is already in use.]
[NICK eric-]
[:irc.underworld.no 433 * eric- :Nickname is already in use.]

[:irc.underworld.no 433 * eric- :Nickname is already in use.]
[NICK eric-]
[:irc.underworld.no 433 * eric- :Nickname is already in use.]
[NICK eric-]
(etc)
This happens because znc thinks it only now tried the AltNick (eric-) and the next thing it does is trying if Nick with "-" appended works (also "eric-").
Fixing this properly might be non-trivial. Why don't we just drop AltNick?
