When I started a botnet (1000-50000 services pseudoclients) on a test network, ZNC suddenly started to lag and I had to reconnect. Other IRC clients (weechat) don't have a problem with such a high number of users.

Can you provide more information on this? Am I to understand they all joined at once? It's very rare to get 1,000 joins at once in even the heaviest load situations. Also, there's a large difference between 1,000 and 50,000, so which was it?
What modules were loaded on ZNC, if any? What scripts did WeeChat have installed at the time?
Just trying to understand how you can be sure it's ZNC. Specifications of the server ZNC was running upon may be helpful as well. I don't suppose you could get what the load figure was when this happened?
