When you have a simple away reason with %s in it (in my case, Disconnected from ZNC (at %s), it'll cut off at the %s.
Resulting in the following line:
(21:58:53) <*simple_away> Away reason: Disconnected from ZNC (on
(21:58:53) <*simple_away> Current away reason would be: Disconnected from ZNC (on
Reproduction steps:
/msg *simple_away reason Disconnected from ZNC (on %s)
/msg *simple_away reason
Since this is only a returned message, and it actually works fine when setting you /away, this issue is trivial.
This was tested on ZNC version 1.4

Simple away was last modified 6 months ago; that's pretty odd. Is anyone
else able to (not) reproduce this?

Seems to be a client-side issue for mIRC. (/scid -a /msg *simple_away reason Hi (%s) hi cuts off (%s).)
Sorry for the confusion.
