Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

When i add tags, it changes the file .frontmatter/database/taxonomyDb.json which is a JSON object formatted in a single line

When i work with git branches, i always have conflict on this file

Describe the solution you'd like

I would like to avoid conflict by having this file automatically formatted

It would be also simpler to review

Describe alternatives you've considered

Doing the formatting my self manually or with a script

Thanks for the report! This is already solved in v10.12.0.

Since that version, all files in .frontmatter/database (taxonomyDb.json, mediaDb.json, and pinnedItemsDb.json) are stored in a readable format: indented, with sorted keys and a trailing newline. The tag values are sorted too, so each tag ends up on its own line and Git can merge the file line by line. Existing single-line files are reformatted once when the extension activates.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  • Everyone working on the project needs to be on v10.12.0 or later. Someone on an older version writes the file back as a single line the next time they add a tag, and you'll get the conflicts again.
  • If a conflict still happens (for example, when two branches add tags that sort next to each other), Front Matter now shows an error notification when the file contains conflict markers, instead of failing silently.

Are you already using the new version with the reformatted JSON files?

Oh ! Sorry for the useless report

Thanks !

I was using version 10.11.0

I haven't the update because i'm using VSCode 1.119.0, the stable version of my distro didn't updated it yet https://search.nixos.org/packages?channel=26.05&query=vscode#show=vscode

This project need 1.125.0 or newer

https://github.com/estruyf/vscode-front-matter/blob/9d74f1c66154eb5cb8aaaef7d9efecbc9aeff1db/package.json#L30

I have updated VSCode to a newer version, which solves the issue
