Ahoj,

I am using version 0.9.8.prerelease1 of this firmware on Lilygo T-Deck plus.

When I am in the options menu, I just figured out that scrolling with the trackball up/down the page can be scrolled.

I initially did not find the option, because it is very easy to accidentally just leave the Mgmt menu completely by turning the trackball a bit horizontally.

This sometimes happens accidentally much too easy.

For me, it is a usability "bug", and I hereby feature wish that horizontal scroll does not change the main menu categories so easily, maybe only continued scrolling over some distace does it (like some "friction" which must be overcome). Or to remove that functionality all together since one can still tap on the button on the screen.

Regards!

Good point! There is an initial version of a (partially generated) wiki for documentation (https://github.com/dabeani/meshcore/wiki/UserGuide-(Ai-Gen)) and the behaviour of horizontal scrolling of the trackball is not yet documented there. I agree that this happens way to easily. It also does not make sense to scroll horizontally in the map and navigate between menu's/tabs instead of moving the map.

If you agree, I'd suggest the following changes:

  • Add some kind of delay that needs to be overcome by continued horizontal scrolling to move between tabs
  • Disable horizontal scrolling between tabs when the Map screen is open to allow the user to move the map with the trackball

As this behavior might be unintuitive when scrolling horizontally with the trackball from Msgs to the Map and then be "stuck" on the map, it might be even better to disable horizontal scrolling with the exception of scrolling on the map.

What do you think?

What do you think?

it might be even better to disable horizontal scrolling with the exception of scrolling on the map.

This is my favourite -- and using horizontal scrolling to scroll the map, to move the cursor in text input fields, and at other places where applicable to go left/ right in the lowest level input element -- not the highest level input element.

Same with vertical scrolling (which usually is scrolling the screen, in the map view scrolling the map, ...).

Tested in 0.9.8 and this seems to work as requested :). Closing issues, but @dreirund feel free to reopen if you disagree ;)
