Changing UI zoom is a "one way" operation, ending up in too big UI cannot be reset because the button gets out of reach. #81

Ahoj,

Describe the bug

When in settings Mgmt → UI changing the UI zoom level (just to test the setting), eventuelly it gets such big that the button cannot be pressed anymore. So it cannot be reset.

Also deleting the /MCTerm/-folder from the SD card did not reset the setting.
Reinstalling the firmware (not the -merged variant because I do not want to overwrite the M5Launcher) did not help, either. Stuck in unusable highly zoomed-in UI.

Which device are you using

  • LilyGO T-Deck Plus

Which Firmware are you using

Version 0.9.7

Regards!

I can't check it right now, but have you checked the /config.conf file and /MCTerm/prefs.txt for a zoom setting? You might be able to plug your SD card in a laptop/desktop, edit the config there, put the SD card back in the T-Deck and reboot the device.

I did not find anything obvious,

and as I stated: Completely removing that did not resolve it (otherwise
a complete removal should have brought the settings back to default.)

Also, literal strings I entered in other config sections (device name,
WiFi data (even thought the device has not WiFi)) did not appear there,
so not all config is stored in /MCTerm/prefs.txt.

@dreirund thanks, I was just double checking. I also referenced a file in the root of the SD card which you did not mention, as there are settings stored there as well. In any case, this is a bug that should be resolved. You can download and install the pre-release version linked here: https://github.com/dabeani/meshcore/issues/77. This firmware version includes a change in how the button that is causing this issue for you works: instead of a single button that cycles through all zoom levels, you can use arrows (up and down) to change the settings. Hopefully, that works out for you to get back to the desired zoom level.
After that, you can "downgrade" again to 0.9.7 if you want to stick to that version for now.

In the root I have only /config.conf, which is by the "M5Launcher" boot loader.

And then I have the directory /MCTerm/ with the file /MCTerm/prefs.txt, and for testing I deleted the whole directory /MCTerm/, thus also /MCTerm/prefs.txt.

I installed it, and I discovered that with this firmware I actually can scroll the display using the trackball. So I could reach that buttons now and restore original zoom level.
(I think that feature was already present in firmware version 0.9.7, but I did not found it because of the usability issue I just reported in issue #85.)

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing, and thanks for the update regarding the two config files. I've been able to check those files myself in the meantime and they are indeed not used to save the zoom configuration 😅 . As the issue will be resolved by installing pre-release 0.9.8 I will mark this issue as closed,
