I created some ideas (with tiny text, and with an icon):
Repeater: (The icon could work well with only two instead of three "circle" lines -- I think I would prefer the two-line-variant to save space, omitting the outer circle.)

I think the text variant also would work with only two letters, saving more space .. If text is chosen, I actually opt for the two-letter-variant (skipping the thirs letter) and not the three-letter-variant shown here.
Of course, if stuff is added outside the icon, the colouring might need to be adapted depending on the current background where it is drawn (although "white" should work in many cases, while "black" not on dark map themes. Maybe a setting to toggle the colour?)
Regards!
I hereby have the feature wish that on the map one can directly see the node type (repeater, user, room server, sensor, unknown).
Currently, [colour coding is used for hop distance](https://github.com/dabeani/meshcoreterm/issues/71#issuecomment-3840370131), so I propose extending the map icon a little bit.

Use the background colour to show node type (and not hop count),
colour the text based on hop count.
(This actually would be my personal preference.)
Other idea which uses even less space would be:
* Use the background colour to show node type (and not hop count),
* colour the text based on hop count.

what do you think about to show the background color in the same colour as the Badges on the Contacts page with "SVR", "RPT",...? then we have it clearly visible with the same visuals? Let me know

This I actually would really like (but it invalidates your current use of colour coding to code for hop counts.)

since, the colour coding is anyway not working correctly (tried to improve it) i think it would make the most sense to switch to a more useful solution!

Implemented in v0.9.12 as beeing [represented by icon colour](https://github.com/dabeani/meshcoreterm/releases/tag/v0.9.12#:~:text=Map%20device%20badge%20colors%20now%20match%20device%20type).
