A red **New messages** line is now drawn at the boundary between what you had already seen and what arrived since, and the view opens on that line rather than at the bottom, with the last message you had read still visible above it for context. The line stays where it was put for as long as you are in the channel — it does not creep downwards as you read — so you can always tell how much of the backlog you have worked through, and messages arriving while you are reading are added below it, where they belong. It appears only when there is genuinely something to catch up on: a channel you are up to date with, or one you are opening for the first time, behaves exactly as before and opens at the newest message. The same line, and the same behaviour, applies to direct messages. Should you want the bottom immediately, the jump-to-bottom button is already there waiting, and sending a message takes you down on its own.
