[notification] e-mail subscription for new pictures #366

I was thinking that it would be nice to set up a subscription system where a user could opt in to get an e-mail notification when there are new pictures on the site. I have a 'private' gallery on piwigo.com so most of my friends/family will not go to my page actively to check if I have posted anything new.

Ideally some sort of digest form, so one would e.g. get maximum one mail per day (X new photos today) or per week perhaps.

It would probably also be useful if one could subscribe to either the entire site, and/or just a subset of albums.

Hi @Eothred give a try to [Administration > Users > Notifications]. It does pretty much what you ask (in my opinion). Tell me what you think.

Ah, interesting, I was not aware of that pane. If a person is subscribed there, he will get an e-mail every time there is a new comment or picture added?

If I see correctly, when I go to my own user and click on 'manage subscriptions', it says that I am not currently subscribed to anything (I have a test user that is not admin to check this). On that page I would expect to see a list of things I could optionally subscribe to?

Hello,

I think that it works that way that it checks the permissions on the
Albums. If there are new pictures in an album where you have permissions to
see the album, these users are available for sending an email. This works
for my site with a few test users in different groups.

I thought that an email would be send automatically as soon as there are
new pictures available. Similar to the RSS feed which is updated
automatically. Did I miss something?

One more thing regarding these email notifications. The email contains the
Gallery title by default and this is a link to the gallery. In my emails
these links are broken. The link is simply "/". So the link to the
subscribe and unsubscribe links also missed the Gallery Home URL. In other
plugins the call to retrieve the Gallery Home URL seems to work properly.
What is wrong here.

Kind regards

Jens

PS: However, I think that Piwigo is THE best image gallery on the net!
Thanks a lot for maintaing it. Jens

Hi again,

So, if I understand correctly, [Administration > Users > Notifications] is used when I want to send e-mail notifications manually? It is pretty good yes, but I am not sure for example how to configure an e-mail here with e.g. thumbnails etc

I had more in mind an automated system which sends out e-mail notification when a new photo has been uploaded. I have seen that there is a reasonably well hidden similar feature for photo comments. If you go to the comment of one photo you may click there on a 'subscribe' button, and opt to subscribe to comments anywhere in the gallery.

The option to not just unsubscribe for existing subscriptions, but also to subscribe to available subscriptions should (in my opinion) ideally be visible when a user goes to the 'user preferences' and 'manage my subscriptions'..

That 'manage my subscriptions' page does not show that you have are subscribing to the administrator e-mail notifications. This subscription can only be subscribed to (as far as I can see), by using the links provided in the e-mail when the administrator configures the subscription. I mean here the /nbm.php?subscribe= and ?unsubscribe= links that are included in the e-mail. I would think it would be nice for the user if those links were already available as buttons in the user configuration page somewhere.

OK, so now I see there is also a 'reminder' feature when I go to edit an album. I had not noticed this feature before. If it is as you mention Jens, that when I send it is not just the people in the group I selected, but rather just those that have new photos accessible (sub-set of the group selected), then that functionality is not very clear to me. It is not obvious who got an e-mail when I clicked send. Maybe there could be a confirmation page stating 'e-mail sent to X people' for example?

There is further, no option that I can see for a given user to 'opt-in' and get automated reminder e-mail whenever there is a new photo uploaded (similar to rss feed, but very few people use or even know how to use a rss feed these days). Either to a single album or to the gallery as a whole. But please note that it could very well be in part that I think this is true because I have not fully understood the feature set of Piwigo.

I wonder about this feature as well.

I've subscribed my family. Confirmation mail has been sent.

When I add a new picture...there is no notification in e-mail.

I wonder how does this work

@hajes I believe that you should manually click on "Administration - Users/Notification" In that window you select the people who should get an update. If there were no new photos since a specific person got a reminder he/she will not be in the list. Disclaimer: as far as I understand it.

That's what I have but it seems Admin>Users>Notifications is just for manual e-mail dispatch

if you want new pictures update...you have to pick on main gallery page "notifications" where is just RSS option.

or just go manually to "recent pictures"

that's two options that may work (never tried because RSS too much hassle)

Was this functionality ever implemented? Or is it something that could be developed now?

One more supporter here. I get the same behavior mentioned by @hajes. Email notifications and even push notifications to the insanely good piwigo app after new pictures for the subscribers would be terrific.

These don't work for me. Registration/system mails work but notifications are spam boxed on Google and don't even arrive on my protonmail. Something jenky is going on with the mailer, or perhaps the mail headers. I have checked, double checked and tested it by writing a plugin that uses pwg_mail(), the plugin works, the notifications do not.
