$dbname = null;

must be changed to :

$dbname = '';

... or else we get a fatal error "Warning: mysqli::mysqli(): (42000/1102): Incorrect database name '0Oõ»áÈ ' in /home/magicphorn/www/piwigo/include/dblayer/functions_mysqli.inc.php on line 68"
